Settling In

We are waking earlier as the sunrise is now about 5.30am, somewhat different to when we arrived in August and it was around 7am. We had become so accustomed to a difference of only about one hour, and never earlier than 6am, all year in the tropics. Much as I like a lie-in, the mornings are beautiful now, softer light than the afternoon and the temperature makes it much easier to rise. Great time to water the garden. We admired the almost-full moon as we drove home last night, the full moon is due on 8th Dec, settlement day.

We'd been to see a special screening at the Wangaratta Cinemas of the Movie 'The Lost King' to support Rotary's fight against polio. We enjoyed the movie but felt quite frustrated at the outcome where the amateur historian, who convinced the archaeological establishment to pursue her dream, ends up with no credit for the find. In the credits she was eventually recognised, and so was King Richard III.

When I talk of watering the garden I'm referring to Kate's two veggie plots and my mobile pots. The number of which grows weekly as the date for settlement nears. I've kept it all fenced in to stop the wallabies and kangaroos nibbling and to date that's been successful. We've now ordered some raised garden beds so in a week or two I'll be repurposing cardboard boxes as weed mat, filling them, setting up a drip water system and transplanting. Summer days get to 40+ here and I can't see veggies in pots surviving.

The paperwork was signed on Tuesday and we completed the final inspection on Wednesday. We contacted the bank and they knew to expect the transfer. All the dots had lined up. Thursday morning came and we drove into Wangaratta to meet the agent about half an hour after settlement was due at 10am, so we could collect the keys. We waited and then we waited some more. Eventually we drove back to Glenrowan. We spent the day stressing that settlement would be delayed to tomorrow, and that might mean the removalists wouldn't be able to deliver on Fri and the plumber wouldn't be able to install the Heat Pump.  OMG! Something similar happened to the new owners of Koolpinyah Cres but we just gave them a verbal agreement that they could have their gear delivered as planned. On enquiring for this on our behalf we were told that it was strictly illegal and we would need to seek a special adjustment and that required solicitors and more money..... We waited as the end of office hours approached and then just after 4.30 we got the call that it had gone through. We were exhausted!

Over the ensuing days we have visited each day and unpacked and rearranged, as you do. We are now up to taking car loads of gear out of Kate's house and the van, to empty into robes and cupboards. Sometimes its hard to remember what is ours and what is Kates after all this time.  Most of our gear that has been in storage seems to be in good nick, a few disappointments, but that's to be expected over the distance it has travelled and months in Melbourne. We have the new hot water system in place, the network connected etc, etc.  We have been invited out to dinner on Wednesday night Dec 14, so we plan to stay in town from then on. We will take the dog with us, she has already settled in and found the best couch position for herself. That will mean just visiting out at Kate's to check on the water etc.  We've had some rain today so that will be good for the plants and make the lawn grow for Eric to mow once more.

We haven't taken much time out lately, but I did slip into the local Farmers Market on Saturday morning and then in the afternoon  Eric and John went to Winton Raceway to watch the Formula SAE-A – a competition where university students design, build and compete in their very own Formula-style open-wheeled racing car. The competition draws universities from around the globe and provides an environment for students to develop problem-solving and outcome-focused management skills for the next-generation STEM workforce. Both electric and petrol fuelled cars were on the track. There were also driverless vehicles.
